Our Assessment: The Valmet Model 2400, represents a classic European-style combination gun designed for versatility in the field. Produced in the latter half of the 20th century, these over-under combination guns paired a shotgun barrel with a centerfire rifle barrel, allowing the user to address a wide range of game with a single firearm. This example’s pairing of 12 gauge over .308 Winchester reflects a practical and effective configuration, with the 12 gauge long established as a highly adaptable sporting cartridge and the .308 Winchester, introduced in the 1950s, known for its accuracy, efficiency, and widespread use in both hunting and military applications. The Model 2400’s hammerless break-action design, single selective trigger, and integral sighting system highlight its thoughtful engineering and intended role as a reliable all-in-one hunting arm.
This example shows honest field use while retaining a strong majority of its original finish, with scattered handling marks, light thinning, and areas of patina that speak to its time in service. The walnut stock set exhibits handling wear and minor imperfections but remains structurally sound, complemented by practical additions such as sling rings and a spacer-adjusted length of pull. Both bores remain bright with defined surfaces, showing only moderate fouling, and the mechanical function is intact with a crisp trigger and properly operating selector system. The presence of paint on the barrels and light surface oxidation are noted but do not detract from the overall character of the piece. Altogether, this Valmet/Savage combination gun stands as a versatile and well-built example of a traditional European hunting concept brought to the American market.
