Our Assessment: The A. Uberti Srl Model 1847 Walker traces its origin to one of the most formidable handgun designs of the 19th century, developed in collaboration between Samuel Colt and Texas Ranger Captain Samuel Hamilton Walker. Introduced in 1847 for use by the U.S. Mounted Rifles, the Walker was the largest and most powerful black powder revolver of its time, chambered in .44 caliber and capable of delivering remarkable energy for a percussion handgun. Its massive frame, 9″ barrel, and six-shot cylinder made it a true horseman’s sidearm, often carried in saddle holsters rather than on the belt. The .44 caliber cap and ball system became synonymous with early American martial revolvers, offering substantial black powder performance and influencing later Colt designs such as the Dragoon and 1860 Army. Modern reproductions like this Golden Tribute example capture that imposing presence while often incorporating decorative embellishments that highlight the revolver’s historical significance.
This example presents as a visually striking commemorative variant, finished in gold plating and enhanced with American-style engraving across approximately 50% of the metal surfaces. It retains about 97% of its refinish, with scattered handling marks, light scratches, and areas of corrosion freckling visible throughout, along with verdigris at the base of the front sight. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling, showing minor fouling and light tooling with superficial corrosion, rating 7/10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly with tight lockup, and the one-piece walnut grip remains in Excellent condition with only minor handling marks. Marked as “018 of 950,” this Golden Tribute Walker offers a bold presentation that reflects both the scale and legacy of Colt’s earliest large-frame percussion revolver.
