Our Assessment: The Uberti 1836 Texas Paterson is a modern Italian reproduction of one of Samuel Colt’s earliest and most historically important revolver designs. The original Paterson revolvers were produced during Colt’s first commercial venture in Paterson, New Jersey, and the Texas Paterson pattern became especially associated with early Texas use and the development of the repeating handgun as a serious martial and frontier arm. Though this 1992 Uberti is a modern black-powder reproduction rather than an original antique, it captures the elegant lines, exposed folding-trigger character, and early Colt percussion styling that make the Paterson pattern so distinctive.
This A. Uberti 1836 Texas Paterson is a .36 caliber black-powder cap-and-ball single-action revolver with a 7 1/2″ barrel, small blade front sight, hammer-notch rear sight, fire-blue and case-colored finish, and one-piece smooth walnut grip. The revolver retains about 97% of its original metal finish, showing handling scratches on the frame, barrel, and cylinder, some tool marks around the barrel lug, and corrosion freckling along the barrel, while the case color remains vivid and the markings are clear. The walnut grip rates in Excellent condition with minor handling and compression marks, no chips, and no cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and rates 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, though the revolver has not been test fired.
