Our Assessment: The Uberti 1836 Texas Paterson is a reproduction of one of Samuel Colt’s earliest revolver designs, representing a pivotal step in the development of repeating handguns. The original Paterson revolvers of the 1830s introduced the concept of a revolving cylinder in a relatively compact and streamlined form, along with the distinctive folding trigger that set them apart from later Colt designs. This 1993 Italian-made example reflects Uberti’s commitment to recreating early Colt patterns, preserving the unique mechanical characteristics and historical styling that defined the Paterson.
Chambered in .36 caliber black powder, this revolver follows the traditional five-shot percussion configuration associated with the Paterson design. The 7 1/2″ barrel provides a balanced profile, while the simple sighting system, consisting of a hammer-notch rear and originally a front blade, reflects the minimalistic approach of early revolver design. The absence of the front sight on this example is noted and will affect sighting, though the revolver otherwise maintains its original configuration. The folding trigger and open frame highlight the experimental nature of Colt’s early work, offering insight into the evolution of later, more refined revolvers.
This example presents in very good condition, retaining approximately 95% of its original finish with light handling wear and minor surface marks. There are a couple of small dings at the muzzle and light marring around the wedge, while the case colors remain vivid and well preserved. The walnut grip shows minor wear and compression marks but remains structurally sound. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, and the action functions correctly. Accompanied by its box, this revolver represents a solid and visually appealing example of the Paterson pattern with minor condition considerations.
