Our Assessment: The Springfield Armory Model 1922 M2 is a purpose-built U.S. military training rifle developed to provide a low-cost, low-recoil platform for marksmanship instruction. Based on the Model 1903 action, the M1922 series retained the familiar handling characteristics of the service rifle while chambering .22 Long Rifle for economical training. The M2 variant, introduced in the 1930s, incorporated refinements to improve reliability and function, and many examples were later arsenal refurbished for continued service.
This 1937-dated example presents in very good overall condition, retaining a high percentage of its arsenal-applied parkerized finish with only light handling wear visible. The walnut stock remains in Very Good condition with minor handling marks and no structural issues, and retains inspection markings that add to its military character. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only light fouling present, and the action functions correctly. The rifle is equipped with a Lyman aperture sight system, consistent with its role as a precision training rifle, and includes a detachable magazine. Altogether, this M1922 M2 stands as a well-preserved example of a U.S. military training rifle from the interwar period.
