Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.

Our Assessment: The U.S. Springfield Model 1899 Krag-Jorgensen Carbine is an iconic firearm of the late 19th century, serving in the U.S. military shortly after the Spanish-American War. This variant, designed specifically for cavalry and mounted troops, features a shorter barrel and a distinctive side-loading magazine that made the Krag unique among American service rifles.

The Krag rifle was praised for its smooth action and accuracy but was quickly replaced by the Mauser-style 1903 Springfield due to its relatively slow reloading system. Nevertheless, Krag carbines remained in use with National Guard and militia units for years after their official service ended, and they continue to be valued by collectors for their historical significance and elegant design.

This particular example, manufactured in 1899, retains much of its original finish and a solid stock, making it a great acquisition for collectors of U.S. military arms. Whether you’re interested in its historical role or simply admire its craftsmanship, this Krag carbine is a fine addition to any collection.
