Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1885, also known as the Winchester Single Shot, is a notable rifle designed by John Browning and produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Introduced in 1885, it stands out as one of the first commercially successful single-shot rifles of its kind.
The Winchester 1885 features a falling-block action, which is known for its simplicity, strength, and accuracy. This design allows for quick and easy loading and unloading of cartridges, making it popular among target shooters, hunters, and competitive shooters alike.
Originally chambered in a variety of black powder cartridges, such as .45-70 Government and .38-55 Winchester, the Winchester 1885 was later adapted to fire modern smokeless powder cartridges. Its versatility and adaptability have contributed to its enduring popularity among firearm enthusiasts.
One of the most famous versions of the Winchester 1885 is the High Wall model, characterized by its robust receiver with a high top strap. This design provides additional strength and rigidity, particularly when chambered for high-pressure cartridges. This model is a modernized reproduction of the High Wall model. -R.E.
