Our Assessment: The Ruger M77 Mark II chambered in .308 Winchester and adorned with a Hogue Stock is a union of legacy and modernity, providing reliability and comfort in one package. The M77 Mark II carries the venerable Mauser-type controlled-feed extractor system, a feature long associated with reliable cycling of rounds, whether in a sporting or high-stakes hunting environment. The .308 Winchester chambering further elevates the rifle’s utility, offering a cartridge that’s renowned for its balance of power and accuracy, making it a go-to choice for both big-game hunting and precision shooting.
The Hogue Stock, well-known for its durability and ergonomics, enhances the overall shooting experience. Overmolded with rubber, the stock offers a tactile grip, even in wet or cold conditions. This added control comes without the expense of comfort, as the stock is designed to cushion and distribute recoil effectively. The rifle becomes an extension of the shooter, allowing for improved accuracy and a more enjoyable shooting experience overall.
To round off the package, the Ruger M77 Mark II includes a three-position safety. This permits the bolt to be locked, or to be operated while the rifle is on ‘safe,’ giving the user options for various field conditions. The synergy of a reliable platform, versatile chambering, and ergonomic stock make this variant of the Ruger M77 Mark II an attractive and capable choice for a wide range of shooting applications.
