Our Assessment:   The Ruger Gunsite Scout in 5.56 NATO is an interesting variation of the original model, which was primarily chambered in .308 Winchester. By opting for the 5.56 NATO chambering, Ruger has aimed to offer a lighter-recoiling alternative that still retains the essential features that make the Gunsite Scout unique. This chambering also brings the added convenience of ammunition compatibility with many modern sporting rifles, including the AR-15.

Built with the same rugged integrity as its .308 counterpart, the 5.56 NATO variant features a cold hammer-forged barrel that ensures accuracy and durability. The forward-mounted Picatinny rail remains an integral component, allowing for the installation of long-eye-relief optics, thereby maintaining the essence of a scout rifle’s quick target acquisition. As with the original version, it comes with iron sights, offering shooters the option for traditional aiming techniques. The laminate stock is not only visually appealing but also aids in the overall durability and stability of the rifle.

Though the 5.56 NATO cartridge may not offer the same level of downrange impact as the .308 Winchester, it still provides more than adequate performance for a multitude of tasks, from hunting small to medium game to home defense scenarios. The lower recoil and lighter ammunition weight also mean that the 5.56 NATO version might be a more suitable option for younger or smaller-framed shooters. Thus, the Ruger Gunsite Scout in 5.56 NATO becomes a versatile and practical choice for those who seek a scout rifle with a modern twist.  Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
