Our Assessment: The Ruger 77/17 is a bolt-action rifle designed to provide shooters with a high-quality, precise shooting experience, particularly tailored to handle the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (HMR) cartridge. This model is part of the popular Ruger Model 77 series, which is renowned for its solid construction, reliability, and elegant design.
Introduced to complement the existing lineup that included models for larger calibers, the 77/17 was specifically developed to exploit the capabilities of the .17 HMR, a cartridge known for its flat trajectory and high velocity, making it ideal for varmint and small game hunting as well as for target shooting at longer ranges. The .17 HMR has been praised for its accuracy and minimal recoil, which are qualities that the Ruger 77/17 enhances through its precise engineering.
The rifle is equipped with a synthetic stock, further enhancing its durability and making it less susceptible to changes in humidity and temperature compared to traditional wood stocks. The stock is designed for comfort and stability, contributing to the rifle’s overall accuracy and ease of use. The boat paddle stock was quite literally a laughing stock when it first came out. Most hunters swapped the Boat Paddle stock for something more sleek and traditional looking. However, a small niche actually found it to be a decent looking rifle and kept the original configuration with swappable grips and inserts. But regardless of how it was received, given its discontinuation these stocks are becoming more and more collectible.
One of the hallmark features of this model is Ruger’s integral scope mounts that are machined directly on the solid steel receiver. This design provides a stable and secure platform for mounting optics without the need for additional bases or rings, ensuring that the scope remains zeroed in even with heavy use. The rifle also features a rotary magazine that fits flush with the stock, providing reliable feeding and a sleek profile.
Overall, the Ruger 77/17 is a superb choice for anyone looking for a high-performance rifle in .17 HMR. It combines the dependable features of the Ruger 77 series with specific adaptations to fully harness the potential of the .17 HMR, making it a precise, reliable, and aesthetically pleasing option for varmint hunters and precision shooters alike.
