Our Assessment: The J. Stevens Model 44 Ideal Rifle in 32-40 caliber was a popular single-shot rifle produced by the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company. This rifle was part of the Stevens Ideal series of rifles and was manufactured from 1894 to around 1947. It was known for its “falling block” or “drop lever” action, which allowed the breech block to swing back and down from the breech face when the finger lever was pushed down and forward. This allowed for the insertion of a cartridge into the chamber. The 32-40 caliber was a popular cartridge for hunting and target shooting during that time.
The Model 44 Ideal Rifle in 32-40 caliber had a cast steel receiver with a color case finish, and the number “44” was stamped on the front face of the receiver or on the lower tang.
The Model 44 Ideal Rifle in 32-40 caliber is considered to be a collectible firearm today, and good examples can still be found for those who are prepared to look for them. The 32-40 caliber cartridge is still widely available, allowing these rifles to be used for hunting and target shooting. Markings: The left side of the chamber is marked, “25.20 32-40”. The right side of the chamber is marked, “TRADE MARK STEVENS REG U.S.PAT.OFF. &FGN” upside down. The underside of the barrel is marked with the serial number “66024”. The bottom tang is marked “44” and “66024”. There is a proof on the left side of the receiver near the chamber.
Barrel Length: 27 ¾ ”, 1/3 Octagonal 2/3 Round
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded post dovetailed to the barrel above the muzzle with a round hood. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled for sight provisions. The upper tang has a peep tang sight installed with a fold-up ladder to adjust for elevation.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece wood featuring a screwed on checkered schnabel style forend and a butt-stock with a smooth straight wrist, a straight comb and a semi-crescent butt-plate. There are a few light scratches, nicks, and compressions. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP is 12 3/4” from the trigger to the rear end of the butt-plate. The butt-plate has no notable wear or damage besides a bit of finish wear on the heel and toe. Overall, the stock is in Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There is minor finish wear around the edges of the octagonal part of the barrel and edges of the receiver. The round of the barrel has some moderate scratching down its length. There is some corrosion in various places but remains lights and thin. There are some scuffs on top of the octagonal barrel. The is light operational wear on the action. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lever lockup is strong. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
