Markings: The bottom of the trigger group has a medallion affixed to it which reads “Match / Conditioned / By McCoy”. The stock is bedded so we are not able to view many of the part markings. The trigger group is hand scribed with a 7 digit number and “4/99 / D McCoy”. The top of the bolt is hand scribed with the rifle’s serial number and “.308W.”
There is no import mark.

Barrel: “4GR 1 10 308 WIN 5 97” – A May 1997 dated Obermeyer barrel chambered in .308 Winchester with a 1:10 twist rate. It is designed to shoot 190 grain bullets.

The stock and sights are described below.
Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches
Sights / Optics: A National Match rear sight is installed.
The right front sight wing is marked “076”. The right rear sight wing is marked “NM/2A”. The windage knob is marked “NM”. The face of the aperture’s riser is marked “NM”. The aperture is marked “520”.
The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The English Walnut stock has a custom Fullerplast finish. The wood has been built up with glass bedding to tightly fit the action and the trigger group.
It has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, a stacking loop, two sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The storage holes in the butt have been filled to add weight to the stock. The buttplate shows light scrapes. The wood shows small light scrapes and small handling marks. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized, Blue Barrel
Finish Originality: Original to Match Conditioning
Bore Condition: The area near the muzzle is semi bright. The remainder of the bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is fouling in the bore that should clean up some. There is no erosion. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.5.
In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The gas tube has been refinished with black paint. It shows scrapes and scratches. The barrel shows light thin scrapes and light discoloration. The metal shows other small light scraps & handling marks. The action shows operational wear. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The rifle weighs just over 11 pounds 3 ounces.
The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
A plastic spacer block has been installed to prevent the loading of .30-06 into this .308 M1 Garand.

Our Assessment: The U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, M1 is known affectionately as “the Garand” after its inventor, John Garand. The rifle would become the first standard-issue semi-automatic infantry rifle in the world. While some countries entered the war with limited issued semi-automatic rifles or developed such rifles during the war, America was the only nation to enter with its Army issuing autoloading rifles on a large scale. General Patton famously referred to the rifle as “the greatest battle implement ever devised”. Millions were produced during WWII and hundreds of thousands afterward, seeing use through the Korean War and into the Vietnam War. Interestingly, while many other weapons and military items would see production contracts sent out to otherwise non-related companies, during WWII production remained with Springfield Armory and Winchester. It was only after the war that production would be contracted out to another gunmaker, Harrington & Richardson, as well as the agricultural equipment maker, International Harvester.
This Springfield Armory M1 Garand originally was made back in 1944. In April of 1999 it was customized and “Match Conditioned” by Don McCoy. Don McCoy was a Navy Armorer who worked on converting M1 Garands to .308 Winchester for the Navy. He later provided services to convert Garands to .308 Winchester and to “Match Condition” M1 Garand Rifles. He supplied some converted rifles through the Civilian Marksmanship Program.
The M1 Garand looks great and has a strong bright bore. The English Walnut stock has a custom Fullerplast finish that was applied by Don McCoy. The rifle has a number of custom upgrades to ensure accuracy for years to come. This M1 Garand is in Fine condition and should make its new owner smile every time they take it out to the range.
