The grip shows a notable compression, there are also several notable compressions just behind the nose cap. The upper handguards show similar marks. There is also a chip in the stock where the charging handle tapers down. There is a notable scratch in the heel of the comb and a second 3 inches below it. There are no visible cracks. The metal buttplate shows finish loss and semi-dulled checkering, the trap door is heavily caked with grease. Overall the stock is in Good + to Very good condition as an original stock for C&R.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original and Refinished.
Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is well defined. There is minor visible pitting mainly in the lands of the center third of the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7.5/10. The CMP inspection tag gives a muzzle reading of 1+ and a throat reading of 2+.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The trigger group and gas tube have been refinished. The rifle shows very minimal wear, marks and signs of use. Even the friction surfaces show very minor wear. The wings of the front sight show some dings, the gas plug is very clean and shows no tool marks. The markings are mostly clear with the exception of the marks on the refinished trigger group which range from faint to clear. Overall this rifle is in about Very Good condition as a CMP Service grade rifle.

Our Assessment: The M1 Garand, designed by Canadian-born John C. Garand and manufactured by Springfield Armory, holds an iconic place in American military history. Serving as the standard-issue rifle for the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War, it was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, this gas-operated, rotating bolt rifle gave American troops a distinct advantage in firefights, allowing for a rate of fire that bolt-action rifles simply couldn’t match. The M1 Garand’s design was revolutionary for its time, with an internal magazine fed by an eight-round “en bloc” clip. The rifle automatically ejected the clip with a distinctive “ping” sound when empty, signaling the need for a reload. This sound became iconic, a signature auditory clue of the weapon’s presence on the battlefield. While the fixed magazine and clip system did present some limitations, they were largely outweighed by the rifle’s advantages in speed and firepower. Today, the M1 Garand is a coveted piece for collectors, competitive shooters, and history enthusiasts alike. It is often seen in vintage military shooting competitions and has become a popular choice for hunters who appreciate its historical significance. With its blend of innovative design, rugged reliability, and proven effectiveness, the M1 Garand is more than just a relic of the past; it’s a symbol of American ingenuity and the bravery of those who carried it into battle.
This example began its life after world war two in late 1954. In 2012 it was sold by the CMP as a Service grade rifle. To review “Service Grade Rifles will show less wear and a better cosmetic appearance than a Field or Rack Grade. Cosmetic condition will be good to very good. Rifle finish may vary, exhibiting normal wear and/or color variation among the metal parts. May have some visible pitting, frosting, or other minor cosmetic deformity on the metal parts. Stock sets may consist of any species of wood (or combination thereof); and could exhibit dents, dings, scratches, and/or structurally insignificant cracks. New production, commercial stock sets may be used, and will likely exhibit signs of wear and prior use. Bores will be bright, and free of any major defect that would be visible to the naked eye. The exterior circumference of the barrel crown may be nicked, dented, or dinged, but such deformity will not extend into the bore. Service Grade muzzles will gauge “3 or less” and the throat erosion will gauge less than 5. A reasonable allowance for gauge tolerances will be afforded.”-CMP. This rifle is in Very Good condition, has an original stock set and a better than grade level bore with plenty of life left in it.
