Our Assessment: The M1 Garand, often called “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” was the standard-issue rifle of the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War. Designed by John C. Garand and adopted in 1936, it was the first semi-automatic rifle widely issued to infantry forces, giving American troops a significant firepower advantage. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield and fed by an en-bloc clip holding eight rounds, the M1 Garand offered excellent reliability, accuracy, and ease of use. Manufactured by multiple contractors, including Springfield Armory, Winchester, and others during its production run, the rifle became an iconic symbol of American military strength. Springfield Armory, the primary manufacturer, continued producing the M1 Garand into the 1950s for post-war use, with 1955 being among the last years of production.
This M1 Garand rifle comes from the personal collection of Bruce Canfield, renowned historian and author of The M1 Garand Rifle, the definitive reference for collectors and enthusiasts of this iconic firearm. This is a rare opportunity for M1 Garand collectors to own a rifle personally selected and owned by one of the foremost experts on the subject. This example was produced by Springfield Armory in about 1954, paired with a barrel from the same year, making it a well-matched example from the final era of M1 production. The rifle was sold in 2000 as a CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) service-grade rifle. The CMP, a government-chartered organization, provides surplus military firearms to qualified U.S. citizens to promote marksmanship and firearm safety. “Service grade” indicates the rifle is in good, functional condition, suitable for shooting and preservation. Service-grade rifles have all major components in working order, with some wear on metal finishes and stocks but no structural issues. These rifles are valued by collectors and enthusiasts as both historical artifacts and functional firearms, bridging a direct connection to America’s military past.
