Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a traditional semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, a stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock shows the usual scattered marks, lines and compressions. There are some notable compressions on the grip and right side of the grip. There are some chips in the stock just in front of the floor plate. The toe of the heel also shows a chip. The forward handguard shows almost no wear. The rear handguard shows a chip at the receiver, and some minor scratches and compressions. The metal buttplate has lost its finish, has semi-sharp checkering and shows scratches and scuffs around the edges. As a Field grade and C&R gun the furniture is in Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is gray with well defined rifling, and mild visible erosion throughout the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle reading of 25+ and a throat erosion of about 3.5. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 6.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains 95% of its metal finish. The barrel, gas tube, and front sight show minor lines and finish loss from age. The trigger group has turned brown with patina. The bolt shows finish loss on the friction surfaces. The bolt and receiver have also turned or are beginning to turn brown with patina. The receiver group and bolt do show very little wear and no notable marks. The gas tube and block are a little loose and move if you wiggle them. The gas tube should be evaluated by a competent gunsmith before the rifle is fired. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Good+ condition. As a CMP rated field grade rifle it is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes the manual, yellow chamber flag, en bloc clip, and the provenance letter from the CMP.
Our Assessment: This M1 Garand made in 1955 is a significant piece of American military history, as it represents one of the last years of production for this iconic battle rifle, which served extensively during World War II and the Korean War. The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), which sells surplus military rifles to qualified U.S. citizens, offered this specific M1 Garand as a Field Grade rifle in 2013. Field Grade rifles are typically sold in “as-is” condition and are functional but show moderate wear, both mechanically and cosmetically. This level of grading often includes rifles that may have some pitting, worn finishes, or mismatched parts, though they remain serviceable and shootable. This example does show wear in the barrel and the gas tube is a little loose but cosmetically is in very good condition with the authentic aged look, all original parts and with very little external wear. The owner asserts “ you are bidding on an absolutely beautiful and rare, 100% original and correct 5.7mil serial range Springfield Armory Garand” to explain the rarity of this rifle “There are approximately 100,000 Springfield Garands in the 6 million serial number range, but there are only 6,152 Springfield Garands in the 5.7 million range and THIS IS ONE OF THEM”.
