Our Assessment: The 1884 Springfield Trapdoor Carbine was a compact, single-shot rifle designed for use by the U.S. cavalry during the late 19th century. Lightweight and maneuverable, the carbine was ideal for mounted troops who required a reliable and portable firearm. The 1884 model included refinements such as an improved Buffington rear sight for better accuracy and a shortened barrel suited for cavalry use. Known for its ruggedness and simplicity, the Springfield Trapdoor Carbine holds a significant place in American military history, particularly during the Indian Wars.
