Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1A was manufactured in 1985 and is chambered in .308 Winchester with a 22-inch National Match marked barrel. Built during the earlier years of Springfield Armory’s commercial M1A production, this rifle combines the proven M14-pattern action with several highly desirable military-style features. The rifle is fitted with an M14E2 stock featuring a pistol grip, vertical folding foregrip, and hinged butt plate, recreating the distinctive appearance of the U.S. military’s M14E2 automatic rifle configuration. Combined with its detachable 20-round magazines and traditional M14 operating system, the rifle has a commanding military presence while remaining a practical and capable shooter.

Mounted to the rifle is a Springfield Springfield ART IV Scope (Auto Ranging Telescope) 3-9x optic, one of the more innovative military-inspired optics ever offered for the M14 platform. The ART system utilizes a first focal plane ranging reticle specifically designed around the trajectory of the 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester cartridge. The system automatically correlates range estimation with bullet drop compensation, providing a corresponding holdover point within the reticle. This ingenious design allowed shooters to rapidly engage targets without performing separate drop calculations, making it a remarkably advanced concept for its era.

Also included with the rifle is a bayonet, further complementing the rifle’s military-inspired configuration. Between the National Match barrel, M14E2 stock, ART IV optic, and bayonet, this is a particularly unique and visually striking M1A package that combines Cold War military aesthetics with one of the most interesting ranging optics systems ever developed for the M14 platform.
