Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is the traditional M14 style Walnut stock with two sling swivels, semi pistol grip, straight comb, a 13” LOP, storage compartment in the butt and the hinged metal buttplate. The upper handguard is a brown painted composite. This stock has been sanded and refinished with a high gloss finish. The receiver and surrounding area has been bedded and filled in with a polymer or resin providing a very tight fit for the receiver and trigger group. The stock shows scattered lines, compressions, marks, and discoloration from the high gloss finish. The top of the comb has a series of small compressions, and the left flank near the butt has some small scratches. The butt plate is scratched up by the opener for the storage compartment. The hinged plate has begun to lose its finish and has semi sharp checkering. The belly of the stock shows scratches from the attached sling. The handguard has chips in the finish around the edges, and a few minor scratches on the top. There are no visible cracks. Overall this stock is in Good + condition for the age of the rifle.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is minor visible pitting in the rifling with lines from use. The feed ramps are smooth and shiny. The muzzle device shows minor carbon build up with little to no Verdigris. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains 98% of its metal finish. There is some very minor wear on the friction surfaces of the receiver and bolt. There is some discoloration in the finish on the barrel, the stripper clip guide and rear sight plate. The trigger guard has a few minor marks. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition considering its age.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a green canvas sling and Two Check Mate 10 round magazines both are slightly dirty but in Very Good condition.
Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1A from 1987 is a civilian version of the iconic M14 rifle, crafted with a focus on both military heritage and precision performance. This M1A retains the classic design elements of the M14, including a 22-inch carbon steel barrel chambered in 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester) for a balance of accuracy and power.
The M1A from Springfield Armory is known for its robust and accurate design, this example includes national match sights with an adjustable rear aperture and 0.62 profile front blade, giving shooters reliable iron sights for both close and mid-range engagements. The rifle also features the traditional walnut stock and brown handguard. However this example has been bedded for a very tight fit in the stock.
Springfield’s M1A line honors the M14’s rich history while catering to civilian marksmen and enthusiasts. This rifle combines the historical appeal of the M14 with Springfield’s reliable craftsmanship, making it a valued addition for collectors and shooters alike. When I spoke with Springfield they indicated this rifle was made before they kept records as to what model a rifle was when it was shipped. They did say that if a rifle was bedded, has National Match sights and a wider than normal profile stock it is a National Match rifle. This rifle has the sights and the bedding, although I am not sure this bedding is factory. Unfortunately the stock has been sanded and the profile has been changed making it very hard to determine with 100% certainty. All of this to say this rifle from 1987 is in Very Good condition for its age. The mechanics are clean, the bore has plenty of life left in it and the sights and trigger are excellent for an M1A.
