Stock: The stock is marked with a circle “P” acceptance mark on the grip. The left flank is marked with the DOD cartouche.

Sights / Optics:  The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “DRC. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “NHC”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a traditional semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, a stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal butt plate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The LOP measures 13″. The wood has been lightly sanded and refinished.  The wood shows minor scattered compressions, lines, and nicks. There is a chip missing from the left flank. The butt plate retains most of its finish, shows rub wear around the edges, and has semi-dulled checkering. The door spring is strong and functions correctly. There are no cracks. Overall the stock set is in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with very well defined rifling. There no visible erosion or pitting in the bore. The CMP grading tag shows a muzzle of 1+ and a throat of 2+. Our gauges show a muzzle reading of 1 and a throat erosion of about 1+. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.   

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show rub wear. The leading edges of the muzzle and gas lock show some finish loss. The action is smooth. A lot of the recesses show cosmoline. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in about Very Good+ condition.  

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a Certificate of Authenticity from the CMP, a manual, a grading tag, and a yellow chamber flag.    

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was manufactured in 1955 and is fitted with a correct Springfield Armory barrel dated December 1954. Produced during the final years of M1 Garand production, this rifle falls within the scarce 5.7 million serial number range, a production block that included only 6,152 rifles, making it one of the rarer late-production Springfield Garands. Adopted by the U.S. Army in 1936, the M1 Garand served with distinction through World War II and the Korean War, becoming one of the most influential military rifles ever fielded. Its exceptional reliability and firepower inspired General George S. Patton to famously remark, “In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.”

This example was sold by the Civilian Marksmanship Program as a Service Grade rifle in 2011 and appears to retain all Springfield Armory components, making it an especially attractive rifle for collectors seeking an original late-production example. The December 1954 barrel remains in excellent condition, rating 9.5/10 with a muzzle erosion reading of 1 and a throat erosion reading of 1+, indicating excellent remaining service life. Combining its scarce serial number range, correct Springfield configuration, documented CMP provenance, and bore condition, this Garand is a superb representative of the final chapter in Springfield Armory’s production of America’s legendary battle rifle.
