Markings:  The left side of the receiver is marked “US Springfield Armory, Model 1899, 229019”. The stock has the “CV”, “P”, and “D” cartouche. The top of the comb is marked “84”.

Sights / Optics:  The front sight is a blade pinned to a base that is soldered to the barrel. The rear sight is a 1899 style U notch leaf that has been screwed to the barrel. 

Stock Configuration & Condition:  The stock is a two piece walnut, nose cap with bayonet lug, banded and grooved forend, straight grip, straight comb, and steel buttplate. There are scratches and compression marks throughout. There are cracks expanding from the buttplate on the left side of the buttstock. There are no chips. Overall this stock is in about Good Plus condition.

Finish Originality: Original  

Bore Condition:  The bore is bright and the rifling is defined. There is no erosion in the bore. There is light fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 8 out of 10.

Overall Condition:  This rifle retains about 45% of its original finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches and thinning throughout. Most of the blue finish has gone in the white. The blue finish is strong on the barrel. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked but are serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in about Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly.  We did not fire this rifle.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The U.S. Springfield Model 1899 Krag-Jørgensen Carbine was the final major U.S. Krag carbine variant, chambered in .30-40 Krag and built around the distinctive side-loading internal magazine system. The Model 1899 carbine was produced until 1902, with approximately 36,000 made before U.S. service rifle production shifted to the Model 1903 Springfield. This example is configured with a 22” barrel, 1899-style rear sight, blade front sight, internal side-loading magazine, two-piece walnut stock, steel buttplate, and clear Springfield Armory receiver markings.

This Krag carbine is in Good condition overall, retaining about 45% of its original blued finish, with the balance showing handling and storage wear, scratches, thinning, and areas worn in the white, while the barrel retains stronger blue. The walnut stock rates in Good Plus condition, showing scratches and compression marks throughout, along with cracks extending from the buttplate on the left side of the buttstock, but no chips. The bore is bright with defined rifling, no erosion, and light fouling, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, the markings are clear, and the screw heads range from sharp to tool-marked but serviceable. This carbine should appeal to collectors of U.S. martial arms, Springfield Krag variants, and C&R military rifles, especially those looking for a representative Model 1899 Krag with a strong bore and honest age.
