Action Type:  Bolt Action Centerfire Rifle Fed by Internal Side-Loading Box Magazine.

Markings:  The left side of the receiver is marked “US Springfield Armory, Model 1898, 130344”. The left side of the stock is marked with a partially worn “JSA / 1898” cartouche.

Barrel Length:  22″

Sights / Optics:  The front sight is a blade pinned to a base that is soldered to the barrel. The rear sight is a 1896 carbine U-notch sight that has been screwed to the barrel.

Stock Configuration & Condition:  The 1898 carbine-style walnut stock has a banded and grooved forend, straight grip, straight comb, saddle ring plate, and steel buttplate. There are scratches and compression marks throughout. There is a crack on the left side of the stock between the side plate and saddle ring plate. There is a crack on the heel expanding from the buttplate screw. There is a crack on the right side of the stock next to the bolt cut out. There are no chips. The LOP measures 13.25”  from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. Overall this stock is in about Fair – Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original  

Bore Condition:  The bore is bright and the rifling is defined. There is light erosion in the bore. There is light pitting in the bore. There is fouling throughout. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 6 out of 10.

Overall Condition:  This rifle retains about 35% of its original finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches and thinning throughout. Most of the blue finish has gone to a patina. There are spots of freckling throughout. The screw heads range from sharp to tooled with serviceable slots. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in about Fair condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly.  We did not fire this rifle.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jørgensen Carbine is a desirable U.S. martial arm chambered in .30-40 Krag / .30 U.S., known for its smooth bolt action and distinctive internal side-loading magazine. Serial number 130344 falls within the National Park Service’s approximate 1899 fiscal-year Krag production range of 116,147–219,925, supporting the listed 1899 manufacture date. This example is configured with a 22” barrel, 1896 carbine U-notch rear sight, blade front sight, carbine-style walnut stock with saddle ring plate, steel buttplate, and original blued finish.

This Krag is in Fair condition overall, retaining about 35% of its original finish with handling and storage wear, scratches, thinning, patina, and freckling throughout. The carbine-style walnut stock rates in Fair-Good condition, showing scratches and compression marks throughout, a crack between the side plate and saddle ring plate, a crack at the heel extending from the buttplate screw, and a crack on the right side near the bolt cutout, but no chips. The bore is bright with defined rifling, light erosion, light pitting, and fouling throughout, rating 6 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, the markings are clear, and the screw heads range from sharp to tooled with serviceable slots.
