Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade pinned to a base that is soldered to the barrel. The rear sight is a U notch sight that has been screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is cracked at the midlength on the left side.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two piece walnut, banded and grooved forend, straight grip, straight comb, and steel buttplate. There is light handling and storage wear. There are scratches and compression marks throughout. There is a crack on the right side of the buttstock expanding from the buttplate. There are no chips. Overall this stock is in about Good Plus condition.

Finish Originality: Refinished
Bore Condition: The bore is semi bright and the rifling is defined. There is light erosion near the muzzle. There is light pitting in the bore. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 6 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its refinish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches and thinning throughout. There are nicks throughout. There is thinning on the buttplate and along the edges of the receiver. The screw heads range from sharp to tooled with serviceable slots. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a cartridge carrier and vintage Winchester .30 Army 220 Grain Full Patch ammo. The ammo will be shipped separately. There is a cleaning rod housed in the buttstock.
Our Assessment: The Springfield Model 1898 Krag Jorgensen carbine represents the final evolution of the Krag rifle system adopted by the United States in the late nineteenth century. Designed with a unique side loading magazine and smooth bolt action, the Krag saw service during the Spanish American War and into the early twentieth century before being replaced by the Model 1903. Carbines such as this example were intended for cavalry and light troops, offering a shorter and more maneuverable profile. Chambered in .30-40 Krag, also known as .30 U.S., the cartridge was the first smokeless powder round adopted by the U.S. military and provided reliable performance for its era.
This example was manufactured in 1899 and retains about 90 percent of its refinished metal finish with handling wear, scattered scratches, thinning along edges, and light nicks throughout the metal surfaces. The two piece walnut stock shows moderate wear with scratches and compression marks along with a crack at the buttstock extending from the buttplate, rating in Good Plus condition overall. The bore appears semi bright with defined rifling along with light erosion near the muzzle and faint pitting, rating 6 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The rear sight is cracked and should be addressed for proper use. The action functions correctly and the rifle includes a cartridge carrier and vintage Winchester .30 Army ammunition, which will ship separately. Overall, this rifle presents as a classic U.S. Krag carbine with period features and typical wear from service and age.
