Action Type: SA/DA Revolver with Swing-Out Cylinder and rimless finger type hand ejector.
Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”, the right is marked “9MM CTG. PAT.4127955”. The sideplate is marked with the S&W monogram logo and the right of the frame is marked with the four-line marcas registradas address. The crane-cut is marked with the model and serial number, the butt of the grip frame is marked with the serial number “19D8760”.
Barrel Length: 4? Heavy Barrel
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade machined to the rib. The rear sight is a square notch trough in the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered walnut Magna stocks with S&W medallions at their tops. There are light handling marks. The checkering is very strong. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blued.
Finish Originality: Original.
Bore Condition: The bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates an 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 99% of its metal finish. There are a couple of little marks through the finish. There is a visible turn line on the cylinder, it is obviously noticeable. There are some scattered light handling marks. The screwheads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lockup shows light play with the trigger depressed. The double-action trigger is smooth and the single-action trigger is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 547 Military & Police is a 9mm parabellum revolver using the K frame as its base. There are a few different configurations including a 3” heavy barrel with a rounded butt frame, and this version, the 4” heavy barrel with a squared butt frame and Magna grip panels. These specific frames have a special cartridge retainer pin above the firing pin that keeps the casing in place while firing. The 547 also has a special finger extractor that allows the ejector to lift out the rimless 9mm cartridge. This revolver also features a flat face semi-bobbed short throw hammer and non shrouded ejector. The 4” heavy barrel configuration only had around 3,784 produced before discontinuation. In March of 1990, S&W produced a Model 547M in .357 Magnum using the left over parts from the 547 production run.
