Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 36, known as “The .38 Chiefs Special,” is one of the most iconic snub-nose revolvers ever produced. Introduced in the early 1950s as the first J-frame revolver chambered in .38 Special, the Model 36 quickly gained favor with law enforcement officers and private citizens alike for its compact size, reliability, and controllable power. Seasoned readers may remember “Dano” carrying one in Hawaii Five-O. Less seasoned readers might remember Detective Andy Sipowicz carrying one on NYPD Blue.
This particular example, manufactured in 2005, commemorates the rise of Texas Hold ‘Em as the preeminent form of poker — captured in popular movies Rounders (1998) and Casino Royale (2006). Its engraving is 24 karat gold plate and depicts cards and suits. It comes with a unique display case that exhibits Smith & Wesson playing cards and poker chips.
This classic and collectable revolver would be an interesting addition to a S&W collection or a unique gift for a devoted card player.
