Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 629 is the stainless steel evolution of the legendary Model 29, introduced to provide the same .44 Magnum performance in a more corrosion-resistant platform. By 1980, early production examples like this one represent the initial wave of stainless N-frame revolvers, maintaining the classic lines and balance of their blued predecessors while offering increased durability for field and range use. Built on Smith & Wesson’s large N-frame, the 629 was designed to handle the full power of the .44 Magnum cartridge, introduced in 1955 and widely regarded for its versatility across hunting and sporting applications. This revolver reflects the transition into modern materials while preserving the traditional double action revolver design.

This example with its 6″ barrel retains approximately 97% of its original stainless finish, showing light scratches, handling marks, and minor operational wear consistent with use. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, rating 9.5/10, with light copper fouling present. The orange insert front sight and adjustable white outline rear sight provide a clear and practical sighting system. The oversized Goncalo Alves target grips remain in Excellent condition, showing only minor handling wear and no structural issues. The markings are clear, though there is a slight mismatch in assembly numbers between the crane and frame, which does not affect overall presentation. The revolver maintains a strong visual appearance with minimal signs of heavy use.

Mechanically, the action functions correctly with good timing, though there is minor movement at lockup, slight crane play, and minimal cylinder endshake, all consistent with normal wear on a used revolver of this type. The Model 629 stands as one of Smith & Wesson’s most enduring large-frame revolvers, combining power, durability, and classic styling in a stainless platform. This example presents as a well-maintained revolver with strong bore condition and solid mechanical function, representative of early stainless .44 Magnum production.
