Overall Condition: This handgun shows very little wear on its metal finish. There is a dragline on the recoil shield and a few light handling marks elsewhere. There are a few scattered scratches on the muzzle break. The cylinder has a very thin turn line. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates an Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lockup produces very light play on each chamber. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Original box and test-fire brass.
Our Assessment: The S&W 500 is built on S&W’s largest frame, the X-Frame, which was developed because none of S&W’s existing double-action frame designs could handle the muzzle energy and pressures generated by the .500 S&W cartridge. It is one of the most powerful production revolvers in the world today, and it is being marketed as being “the world’s most powerful handgun” by S&W. The Model 500 can fire a bullet weighing 350 gr (22.7 g; 0.8 oz) at 1975 feet per second (602 m/s) generating a muzzle energy of over 3,030 foot-pounds force (4.1 kJ) and a momentum of 13.7 Newton second. All this to say, this round is at the least absolutely devastating for whatever is on the receiving end.
This particular Model 500 is in Excellent shape. With its stainless-and-rubber construction, it should be of great interest to the handgun hunter or to the outdoorsman in bear country. This writer does not care to tangle with Ol’ Ephraim with any handgun — but if he had to, this would be the choice.
