The screw heads are sharp to lightly used. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup produces minimal side-to-side movement. The double-action is smooth and the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Model 66 is, essentially, a stainless steel version of the Model 19. This example, with its 6-inch barrel and adjustable sights, gives the Model 19’s balance precision and power and is carry-friendly and also makes it more corrosion-resistant and appealing to those who prefer the look of stainless steel. The K-Frame revolver is one of the most important innovations in Smith & Wesson history, firearms history for that matter, and was built specifically to handle the .38 S&W Special cartridge. Since its introduction in 1899, the K-Frame has been a favorite for military and police professionals as well as target shooters and enthusiasts. Today’s K-Frame is available in .22 LR, .22 WMR, .357 Magnum and .38 S&W Special.
The .38 Special California Highway Patrol (CHP) Model 66-2 is a traditional double-action revolver built on the Square Butt K Target Frame and is rated for +P ammunition. These were manufactured for the CHP and later for the Los Angeles Police Department. This revolver is marked “CHP” on the left side of the frame. When the CHP sold them out of service, they stamped “OHB” over the “CHP” markings, but this one has its original markings intact. The revolver is in Fine condition with about 98% of its finish, a bright bore with sharp rifling, and a good lockup on the cylinder. This would make a great shooter, but with the original CHP markings may also get the dedicated Smith & Wesson collectors interested. So bid high and bid firm. I highly encourage you to take a look at the condition in our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
