Markings: The right side of the frame has a S&W monogram. The right side of the frame has a Marcas Registradas. The right side of the barrel is marked “Backpacker”. The left side of the barrel is marked “44 Magnum”. The frame at the crane is marked with the serial number and model number. The right side of the frame is laser engraved with a bear head. The cylinder is laser engraved with bear tracks.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a red fiber optic beaded blade pinned into a ramp integral to the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable black V notch screwed to the top of the frame. The top strap of the frame is drilled and tapped for an optic mount.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece laminate wood Pachmayr Renegade grips, checkered, with 3 finger grooves. There is light handling wear. There are no chips or cracks. Overall these grips are in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is light lead buildup in the bore. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 98% of its original finish. There are scratches and light handling wear. There are a few spots of burnt on powder fouling by the porting. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall this revolver is in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: This action functions correctly. The timing is good. There is minimal movement of the cylinder stop at lockup. There is minimal movement at the crane. There is no cylinder endshake. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

The Model 629 lineage traces back to the original stainless steel .44 Magnum revolvers introduced in the late 1970s, themselves an evolution of the famed Model 29 that brought the .44 Magnum cartridge into the spotlight. Chambered in .44 Magnum, a cartridge introduced in 1955 and known for its substantial power and versatility, the Backpacker variant adapts that performance into a short-barreled, trail-ready configuration. The 2.5 inch ported barrel, combined with modern features such as fiber optic sights and drilled and tapped top strap, reflects a design tailored for practical field use in demanding environments.
This example remains in excellent condition, retaining approximately 98 percent of its original stainless finish with only light handling wear and minor evidence of use. The laser-engraved bear head on the frame and bear track motif on the cylinder give the revolver a distinctive visual identity that complements its intended outdoor role.
