Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The right side of the barrel is marked “41 MAGNUM”. The right side of the frame is marked with a 4-Line Marcus Registradas. The side plate is marked with a S&W Monogram. The crane cut is marked “MOD. / 58”. The crane in marked “6158 / B2”. The inside of the stocks is machine-stamped “272937”.
Barrel Length: 4″ Solid Rib
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramp affixed to the solid rib. The rear sight is a square notch rectangular sight milled into the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece checkered walnut Magna stocks. There are no chips or cracks. There are very few scratches and the checkering is sharp. The grips rate an Excellent overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blued, Case colored hammer and trigger.
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 99% of its metal finish. There is a turn line through the finish on the cylinder. There is just a bit of finish loss on the crown. There are a couple of tiny scratches on the barrel. The screw heads are vary from sharp to lightly tooled. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates an Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is light play on the chambers in full lockup but no end shake. The double-action trigger pull is smooth with a crisp single-action break. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Though the Model 58 was marketed as a police revolver, its adoption was limited due to the significant recoil and bulk compared to standard service revolvers chambered in .38 Special or .357 Magnum. Officers found the full-power .41 Magnum loads to be excessive for duty use, leading to its eventual decline in popularity for law enforcement.
The Model 58 has since gained a strong following among collectors, enthusiasts, and handgun hunters who appreciate its classic N-frame design, powerful chambering, and historical significance. With its solid construction and timeless revolver aesthetics, the Smith & Wesson Model 58 remains a respected choice for those seeking a no-nonsense, heavy-hitting wheelgun.
This particular Model 58 has been well cared for. It has been modified with a .500″ target hammer and trigger, likely off of a Model 57. It is in an Excellent condition and as only about 20,000 were made, should be of considerable interest to the Smith & Wesson collector.
