Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 57 has long been regarded as a connoisseur’s magnum, offering more authority than the .357 Magnum while maintaining a flatter trajectory and often more manageable recoil impulse than the larger .44 Magnum. Introduced in 1964 on Smith & Wesson’s robust N-frame, the Model 57 was chambered in .41 Remington Magnum as part of a law enforcement and sporting initiative to create a powerful yet practical big-bore revolver. Though the cartridge ultimately saw greater success among hunters and enthusiasts than police agencies, the Model 57 earned a strong reputation for accuracy, strength, and refined handling characteristics.
This 1980 production example features a 4-inch pinned barrel, adjustable rear sight, and classic blued finish with case colored hammer and trigger. It retains approximately 97% of its original finish, showing a thin, crisp turn line on the cylinder, light thinning at the muzzle and leading cylinder edges, and minor swirl marks on the frame. Carbon rings are present on the cylinder face, consistent with normal use. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only minor fouling, rating 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut target grips with football cutouts show light handling marks and minor compression dings but no cracks or chips, rating in Very Good condition.
Mechanically, the revolver functions correctly with very tight lockup and minimal play when the trigger is depressed. The double-action pull is smooth and the single-action break is crisp. This Model 57 remains a desirable example of a classic N-frame magnum revolver from the late pinned-barrel era.
