Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”, the right is marked “41 MAGNUM”. The side plate has S&W’s monogram logo and the right side of the frame has the four-line Marcas Registradas address. The crane cut is marked with the serial “AUC2073” and model number “57-1”. The butt is marked with the serial number.

Barrel Length: 6”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramp blade with a red insert attached to a ramped base integral to the barrel rib. The rear sight is a flat top, square notched and white outlined leaf in a base that is micrometer click adjustable for windage and elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are Hogue one-piece rubber overmolded grips with finger grooves and cobblestone texturing. There are minor handling marks. There are no rips or tears. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is minor fouling present. In this writer’s opinion the bore rate 9/10.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its Nickel finish. There are some minor swirl marks and draglines from light use and storage. There are no major defects. There is a light turn line on the cylinder. The screw heads are sharp to lightly worn with serviceable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Fine to Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder locks up with very light side-to-side play on each chamber when the trigger is depressed. The double-action trigger is smooth and the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes with non-matching plastic case.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 57-1 is a classic N-frame magnum revolver from Smith & Wesson, chambered in the powerful and somewhat underappreciated .41 Magnum. Introduced in the 1960s, the .41 Magnum was intended to bridge the gap between the .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum, offering greater stopping power than the former while producing less recoil and blast than the latter. Although it never achieved widespread law enforcement adoption, it found a loyal following among handgun hunters and shooting enthusiasts who appreciated its balance of power, accuracy, and controllability.

This 1987 example is in Fine to Excellent condition, retaining approximately 97% of its original Nickel finish with only minor swirl marks and light handling wear. The bore is strong, rating 9/10, with bright lands and sharp rifling, showing only minimal fouling. The revolver functions correctly, with a smooth double-action trigger, crisp single-action break, and tight lockup with only slight movement. The Hogue rubber grips are in Very Good condition and provide a comfortable and secure grip.

With its 6” barrel and adjustable sights, the Model 57-1 is well-suited for range work, target shooting, and handgun hunting, where its .41 Magnum chambering offers excellent performance on medium game with manageable recoil. This example represents a well-preserved and highly shootable version of a somewhat overlooked classic in the Smith & Wesson lineup, appealing to both collectors and shooters alike.
