Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.  There are burn marks at the ports and on the front sight.  There is some minor fouling in the grooves.  In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are some draglines and light handling marks. There are a few scattered little light marks and streaks on the metal. The cylinder has one or two faint little hairline scratches and micro scuffs, appearing to be typical storage wear. The cylinder has a thin turn line. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lockup produces very light play on each chamber. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories:  Plastic carry case serialized to the gun. Original keys, and brochures.

Our Assessment: The S&W 500 is built on S&W’s largest frame, the X-Frame, which was developed because none of S&W’s existing double-action frame designs could handle the muzzle energy and pressures generated by the .500 S&W cartridge. It is one of the most powerful production revolvers in the world today, and it is being marketed as being “the world’s most powerful handgun” by S&W.

The Model 500 can fire a bullet weighing 350 gr (22.7 g; 0.8 oz) at 1975 feet per second (602 m/s) generating a muzzle energy of over 3,030 foot-pounds force (4.1 kJ) and a momentum of 13.7 Newton per second.

All this to say, this round is at the least absolutely devastating for whatever is on the receiving end. The Smith & Wesson .500 Special is a shorter cartridge that is fully compatible with this pistol giving a bit more ammunition options which is a nice touch. This revolver looks to have been used infrequently.  If you’re looking for your next hunting handgun, this one should take anything in North America, and probably the rest of the world. Please see our high quality pictures and good luck!
