Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 is one of the most recognizable revolvers of the 20th century, representing the early production of the N-frame .44 Magnum that helped define the modern magnum revolver. Introduced in 1955 and refined through subsequent engineering changes, the “-2” variant produced in the mid-1960s retains desirable features such as the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder, hallmarks of Smith & Wesson craftsmanship during this era. This revolver was produced during the period just prior to its surge in popularity following its association with American law enforcement and popular culture in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Chambered in .44 Magnum, a cartridge developed to deliver substantial power and versatility, the Model 29 became synonymous with large-frame revolver performance.

This example with its 4″ barrel retains approximately 98% of its current blued finish, showing only light handling and operational wear with a few scattered surface marks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, rating 9/10, with some stubborn lead fouling present. The revolver is equipped with an orange insert front sight and an adjustable white outline rear, providing a clear and practical sighting system. The oversized Goncalo Alves target grips show handling wear, including scratches and compression marks with some finish weathering, but remain in Good to Very Good condition. The markings are crisp and clear, and the included wood presentation box enhances the overall display and collectability of the piece.

The Model 29-2 stands as a defining example of Smith & Wesson’s large-frame revolver design, combining power, balance, and refined machining in a platform that has remained highly regarded by collectors and shooters alike. Its 4″ configuration offers a more compact and responsive handling profile compared to longer-barreled variants, while still maintaining the authority of the .44 Magnum cartridge. This example presents as a well-maintained revolver with strong finish, a high-quality bore, and excellent mechanical function, representing a desirable period of production for the Model 29 line.
