Year of Manufacture: 1979-1980
Caliber: .44 Magnum
Action Type: Double Action / Single Action Revolver with Swing-Out Cylinder
Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON,” though some of the gold fill has been lost, most notably in the “N.” The right side of the barrel is marked “.44 MAGNUM.” The right side of the frame bears the “Marcas Registradas” marking, and the side plate features the S&W monogram. The crane cut is marked with the model and serial number.
Barrel Length: 4” (Respectively 3 7/8” actual length), Pinned
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a black serrated ramp with a red insert. The rear sight is a Microclick adjustable square-notch sight.
Grip Configuration & Condition: The grips are bright, blonde wood target stocks with checkering and ornate line work. They are in like-new condition but are not original to the revolver. The backstrap of the grip frame is exposed and extends slightly beyond the grips. The grip screw sits slightly proud and, in this writer’s opinion, should be trimmed.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright, and the rifling is sharp. There is stubborn fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 94% of its blued finish. There is finish loss at the muzzle on both sides, a crisp turn line through the finish on the cylinder, and a drag line inside the frame. There is oxidation and finish loss under the crane cut in front of the trigger guard. There is color loss in a crevice on the outside of the crane. The gold fill in the markings has been partially lost. The serrated target-width trigger and knurled hammer retain a good amount of case coloring. The screw heads are sharp, the pins are clean, and the markings are crisp. Overall, this revolver rates in very good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes with a wooden display box (not original) and a cardboard box (also not original). The wooden box has two minor imperfections on the right center of the lid, though they are not easily noticeable. The exterior has an exquisite golden glow and is adorned with the S&W monogram on the lid. The inside is lined with blue velvet, and the flocking has been replaced. The tray contains a screwdriver, bore brush, barrel mop, and cleaning rod.
Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 is a legendary revolver, made famous by the Dirty Harry films and revered for its power, precision, and craftsmanship. This 1979-1980 production example retains about 94% of its blued finish, with expected signs of handling and use. The pinned barrel and recessed cylinder reflect the desirable classic features of the Model 29-2.
The revolver comes with an elegant wooden display case (not original) and a small tools kit, enhancing its collector appeal. The grips, while not original, are beautifully crafted, offering a unique aesthetic with checkering and ornate line work.
For collectors, this Model 29-2 represents one of the last years of production before Smith & Wesson moved away from the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder design. Whether as a shooter, display piece, or investment in classic American revolvers, this .44 Magnum powerhouse is a fine addition to any collection. So bid high and bid firm. Please take a look at the condition in our high-quality photos. Good luck with your bid. -K.F.
