Our Assessment: This Smith & Wesson Model 22-4 is a handsome modern N-frame revolver chambered in .45 ACP, styled after S&W’s historic large-frame military revolvers of the early 20th century. The original S&W Model 1917 was produced for U.S. military use during World War I, using moon clips to allow the rimless .45 ACP cartridge to function in a revolver and share ammunition with the M1911 pistol. This 22-4 captures much of that classic character with its 5 1/2″ barrel, fixed half-moon front sight, milled topstrap rear notch, lanyard loop, diamond-checkered walnut stocks, and .45 ACP chambering, while adding the striking visual appeal of a vivid case-colored frame paired with a blued barrel and cylinder.
This revolver remains in Excellent overall condition, retaining about 99% of its original finish with only light handling marks and a faint cylinder turn line. The case coloring is bright and vivid, the markings are clear and legible, and the screw heads remain sharp. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. The diamond-checkered walnut stocks are also Excellent, with sharp checkering, only a few pressure marks, and a small spot of finish flaking on the left panel. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, the cylinder locks up well on each chamber with no side-to-side play, the double-action pull is smooth, and the single-action break is crisp. With its classic martial styling, .45 ACP moon-clip practicality, bright case coloring, and included moon clip and snap caps, this Model 22-4 should appeal to Smith & Wesson collectors, N-frame enthusiasts, and shooters who appreciate the look and handling of the old service revolvers in a modern production package.
