Stock Configuration & Condition:  The grips are two-piece Goncalo alves stocks with finger grooves, a speedloader cut, and S&W medallions.  The grips have light handling wear in the form of small scratches and compression marks.  There are no chips or cracks.  Overall, the grips rate a Fine condition.

Bore Condition:  The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 10 out of 10.

Overall Condition:  This handgun retains about 96% of its metal finish.  There are very few minor handling marks.  There is a sharp turn line on the cylinder.  The screw heads are sharp.  The barrel and shroud have taken on a plum patina.  The markings are clear.  Overall, this handgun rates a Fine condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly.  We did not fire this handgun.  The lockup is good and there is little side to side play.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories:  Original factory box.

Our Assessment:  The Model 24-3 was a 1983 reintroduction of the Model 24, Model of 1950 .44 Special Target revolver.  The Model of 1950 was, in turn, the successor to the 1926 Model .44 Target.  The Model 1950 had a shrouded target rod usually reserved for magnum calibers.

This is a great addition to any Smith collector’s safe.  The 3 inch variants, introduced in 1983, were the Combat Variation aka Lew Horton Special.  Only 1,000 were made. Note Product code 100787 on box.

For those more inclined to shoot than collect, the gun fits well in the hand and points nicely.  Paired with a nice S&W trigger pull and you have a winner.  This is a purpose built revolver for competition, and with the S&W name on it you can’t go wrong no matter if it is for collecting or shooting.  Please see our photos.
