Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 5906 is a semi-automatic pistol that was introduced in the early 1980s as part of the company’s 3rd generation of handguns. It was designed primarily for law enforcement and military use, but it also gained popularity among civilian shooters. The pistol has a stainless steel construction, giving it durability and resistance to corrosion. It features a traditional Browning tilting-barrel locking system, where the barrel tilts down to unlock from the slide during the recoil cycle. This design contributes to the pistol’s overall reliability. One of the notable features of the Model 5906 is its ambidextrous safety/decocker lever, allowing both left and right-handed shooters to easily engage and disengage the safety or decock the hammer. The Model 5906 had widespread use by law enforcement agencies in the United States and around the world due to its rugged construction, reliability, and accuracy. It was also adopted by various military and security forces. However, production of the Model 5906 ceased in the early 2000s when Smith & Wesson transitioned to newer handgun designs. -R.E.
