Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON” / “44/40”. The right side of the barrel is marked and gold inlaid “1836 TEXAS 1986”. The left side of the frame is marked with a small S&W monogram. The right side of the frame is marked with the four-line Marcas Registradas. The right side plate is marked with a wagon inside a Texas outline, inside a circle, with “1986” above the circle and “1836” below, and are all gold inlaid. The crane cut is marked with the serial number and “MOD. 544”. The crane arm is marked with assembly marks.
Barrel Length: 5″, Solid rib
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramp blade with a red insert, fixed to a rise in the barrel’s solid rib. The rear sight is a flat top, square notched and white outlined leaf in a base that is micrometer-click adjustable for windage and elevation screwed to the top strap. The topstrap and rib are serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth Goncalo Alves target grips with silver S&W medallions. There is light handling wear. Overall, the stocks rate in about Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. There is clouding throughout the finish, with areas showing thinning and a brown tone. There are minor scratches along the metal surfaces. The cylinder has a turn line. The case-color is vibrant. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in Very Good-Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup is tight with no perceptible play at each chamber. The double action is smooth, and the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 544 was produced in 1986 as a limited Texas sesquicentennial commemorative, marking 150 years since the Republic of Texas declared independence in 1836. Built on the large N-frame and chambered in .44-40 Winchester, the revolver paired a historic Old West cartridge with Smith & Wesson’s modern double-action lockwork, adjustable sights, and finely finished commemorative details. The .44-40 chambering has strong historical associations with frontier-era rifles and revolvers, while the 5″ barrel gives the Model 544 a distinctive balance between service and sporting configurations. This Model 544 retains approximately 95% of its original blue finish, with minor scratches, a cylinder turn line, and areas of clouding, thinning, and brown toning across the metal. The smooth Goncalo Alves target stocks remain in Excellent condition, while the bright 9.5/10 bore has sharp rifling and no visible erosion. The action functions correctly with a smooth double-action pull, crisp single-action release, tight lockup, and no perceptible play at each chamber.
