Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 29 is one of the defining American magnum revolvers, originating with the introduction of the .44 Remington Magnum cartridge and Smith & Wesson’s first production .44 Magnum revolvers in 1956. Originally marketed simply as the “.44 Magnum,” the revolver became the Model 29 when Smith & Wesson adopted numerical model designations in 1957. The long 8 3/8″ barrel was added in 1958 in response to demand for a configuration better suited to hunting and long-range handgun shooting. The Model 29’s already formidable reputation was transformed into cultural icon status following its prominent appearance in the 1971 film “Dirty Harry,” creating tremendous demand throughout the 1970s. By the time this N330174 revolver was produced circa 1975-1976, the Model 29-2 represented the classic form of the revolver, with a pinned barrel, recessed chambers, premium target sights, and Smith & Wesson’s traditional high-polish blue finish.
This Model 29-2 is an exceptionally attractive example, retaining approximately 98% of its original blue finish with only small muzzle scratches, scattered handling and storage wear, and normal operational evidence. The checkered target stocks remain in Excellent condition with sharp checkering and virtually no handling wear, while the red-ramp front sight and white-outline micrometer-adjustable rear sight provide the premium sighting arrangement characteristic of the Model 29. The bright 9.5/10 bore with sharp rifling and no erosion is particularly strong, and the revolver remains mechanically excellent with tight lockup, a smooth double-action pull, and a crisp single-action release. Matching serial numbers on the butt, cylinder, and extractor are desirable originality indicators, while the included display box and cleaning kit provide an attractive presentation. With its long 8 3/8″ barrel, strong original finish, excellent bore, and classic pinned-and-recessed configuration, this is a particularly handsome example of the Model 29 during the height of its 1970s popularity.
