Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece smooth Goncalo Alves target stocks with medallions and a football cut. The wood grain is a dark red and highly select, adding to the revolver’s aesthetic appeal. The grips show no notable handling marks and are in excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains approximately 99% of its original blued finish. There are only faint handling marks visible and a very light and intermittent turn line on the cylinder that does not break the finish. The screw heads are sharp, and the markings are clear. This revolver has been meticulously maintained and shows very little evidence of use. Overall, it is in excellent to near-mint condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lockup produces minor side-to-side play on each chamber with the serrated target trigger depressed. The double-action trigger is smooth, and the single-action trigger is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Includes the original box.
Our Assessment:
The Smith & Wesson Model 27-2 is a true classic, embodying the legendary craftsmanship and quality that defined Smith & Wesson revolvers. Introduced as the Registered Magnum in 1935, the Model 27 became an instant favorite for its power, accuracy, and durability.
This 1980 Model 27-2 features the desirable 8 3/8” barrel, making it ideal for target shooting and precision work. Retaining 99% of its original finish, with a pristine bore rated 10/10, this revolver is a stunning example of a well-preserved and rarely used firearm. The Goncalo Alves grips add elegance to the robust N-frame design, which is shared with the .44 Magnum.
