Overall Condition: This revolver retains much of its refinished blue finish, though some markings have been blurred due to the refinishing process. The metal surfaces show light handling marks, consistent with its age and history. The markings that remain visible include the serial number, property markings, and ordnance stamps, adding to the revolver’s historical authenticity.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder locks up tightly with minimal play. The double-action trigger is smooth, and the single-action trigger is crisp. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used and antique firearms, a thorough inspection and cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 1917 is an iconic revolver that played a crucial role during World War I, serving as a secondary standard-issue sidearm for the U.S. Army. This revolver, serial number 132844, reflects its military heritage with markings like “United States Property,” an ordnance bomb stamp, and an eagle’s head stamp on the trigger guard.

This example has been refinished in blue, giving it a fresh appearance, though some original markings have become blurred during the process. The walnut grips show wear consistent with use, including losses on the left panel and rub marks on the right, but they remain structurally sound. The bore is semi-bright with strong rifling, rating 8.5/10, indicating good performance potential despite some fouling.

With its rich history and military provenance, this Model 1917 is a great addition to any collection of military or Smith & Wesson firearms. Whether displayed or taken to the range, this revolver is a tangible piece of American history, reflecting the craftsmanship and utility of one of the most famous revolvers of its era.
