Our Assessment: Introduced in 1908, the Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector 1st Model, commonly known as the Triple Lock, represents one of the finest examples of early 20th century revolver engineering. Built on the large N-frame and distinguished by its third locking point at the crane, the design provided exceptional strength and precise cylinder alignment, earning its enduring nickname. By 1912, production was in full stride, with these revolvers reflecting the high standards of pre-war craftsmanship, including hand-fitted actions and finely machined components. Chambered in .44 S&W Special, introduced in 1907 as an evolution of the earlier .44 Russian, the cartridge became known for its accuracy and balanced performance, cementing its place as a favored revolver round among enthusiasts of the era.
This example retains approximately 90% of its current refinish, showing scattered handling marks, light operational wear, and some areas of corrosion freckling consistent with age and use. The 6 1/2″ pinned barrel provides a long sight radius, complemented by a pinned target-style front sight and a U-notch rear sight set into the top strap. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, with only minor fouling present. The checkered walnut grips with gold S&W medallions remain in Fine condition, with sharp checkering and only light handling impressions. The action functions correctly with strong lockup and minimal play, reflecting the robust design of the Triple Lock system. This revolver stands as a classic example of Smith & Wesson’s early large-frame revolvers, combining historic design with enduring mechanical integrity.
