Model:  625-8

Serial Number:  KCB0162

Year of Manufacture:  2010-’20 / Modern

Caliber:  .45 ACP

Action Type:  6-Shot, Single and Double Action Revolver with Swing-Out Fluted Cylinder

Markings:  The yoke cut is marked with the serial and model numbers.  The right side of the frame is marked with the four-line Marcas Registradas address, the left side has S&W’s monogram logo.  The sides of the grip frame and yoke have inspection marks.  The left side of the barrel is marked “PERFORMANCE CENTER”.  The right side of the barrel is marked “.45 A.C.P.”.

Barrel Length:  4″

Sights / Optics:  The front sight is an interchangeable patridge pinned to the barrel rib.  The rear sight is a flat top square notched leaf in a base that is micrometer-click adjustable for windage and elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition:  The grips are one piece textured rubber Pachmayr  with finger grooves.  There are no chips or cracks, though there are small scratches and compression marks.  The grips are in a Fine condition.

Type of Finish:  Stainless

Finish Originality:  Original

Bore Condition:  The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp.  There is no erosion in the bore, though there is a little lead fouling.  In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition:  This handgun retains nearly all of its metal finish. The balance of the stainless shows mild operational wear — to include burn marks on the face of the cylinder and a dragline on the recoil shield.  There is mild handling wear throughout.  The cylinder has a light turn line.  The screw heads are sharp.  The markings are clear.  Overall, this handgun rates a Fine condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly.  The cylinder lockup has light play and minor endshake on each of the six chambers.  The double-action trigger is very light and smooth and the single-action is very light and crisp.  We did not fire this handgun.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories:  This revolver comes with a moon clip wrench and a Performance Center aluminum box.  It also has an attractive set of laminate grips in excellent condition that were likely original equipment.  It needs some moon clips to complete the set.

Our Assessment:  The S&W Model 625 is a gun with an interesting, if confusing, history.  There was never a 625 “no dash”, nor have any 625-1s been seen with the first revolvers being Model 625-2.  This particular example is a 625-8, a 2001 modification that added an internal key lock system to the .45acp.

It weighs in at 39 oz., and would indeed make a nice (relatively) lightweight bear or camp gun for use in the bush.  Wearing its laminate grips it would make a nice BBQ gun.
