Our Assessment: The Shiloh Sharps 1874 with a 30-inch round bull barrel, Soule sight, Hadley eye disc, and single trigger is a remarkable example of the iconic Sharps rifle design. The 30-inch round bull barrel is one of the defining characteristics of this rifle. The barrel’s length and profile contribute significantly to its accuracy and stability. The bull barrel, which is heavier and thicker than standard barrels, helps to reduce barrel vibration and improve heat dissipation. This results in more consistent shot placement and better overall performance, especially during extended shooting sessions. The 30-inch length also aids in achieving higher muzzle velocities and improved ballistic performance, making it ideal for long-range shooting. Equipped with a Soule sight, the Shiloh Sharps 1874 offers superior precision for target shooting. The Soule sight is a highly adjustable rear sight that allows for precise windage and elevation adjustments. This level of adjustability is essential for long-range shooting, where even slight deviations can significantly impact accuracy. Complementing the Soule sight is the Hadley eye disc, which further enhances the rifle’s sighting capabilities. The Hadley eye disc is an adjustable aperture that allows the shooter to select different aperture sizes. This feature is particularly useful in varying lighting conditions, enabling the shooter to optimize sight picture clarity and focus. The combination of the Soule sight and Hadley eye disc provides a highly versatile and precise sighting system that can adapt to different shooting scenarios. The single trigger on this Shiloh Sharps 1874 is another noteworthy feature. Unlike double-set triggers, which allow for an exceptionally light and crisp trigger pull, the single trigger offers simplicity and reliability. The single trigger mechanism is straightforward and less prone to adjustment issues, making it a dependable choice for shooters who prefer a consistent trigger pull. While it may not provide the ultra-light pull of a set trigger, a well-tuned single trigger can still offer a clean and precise break, contributing to overall shooting accuracy. In summary, this Shiloh Sharps 1874 is a highly capable and historically significant rifle, the fire blued screws, deep blued barrel, and beautiful walnut make this rifle a sight to behold.
