Our Assessment: This Savage Model 99A is a 1982-production lever-action rifle chambered in the classic .250-3000 Savage cartridge. The Model 99A is a solid-frame variant of Savage’s iconic rotary-magazine lever rifle, known for its strength, reliability, and smooth operation. This example features a 22″ barrel, internal rotary magazine with operational cartridge counter, schnabel forend, straight-grip walnut stock, straight comb, and serrated steel buttplate. The rifle retains its factory sight setup, including a beaded front sight and a Williams adjustable U-notch rear sight, while the receiver is drilled and tapped for scope bases, offering practical optics flexibility.
Condition is Excellent overall, with the rifle retaining approximately 98% of its original blued and color-case finish. The metal shows only light handling wear, with minor corrosion staining on the bolt being the primary noted flaw. The screw heads remain sharp, and all markings are clear and well-defined. The walnut stock set is also in Excellent condition, showing only light handling wear and no chips, cracks, or structural issues, and presents very cleanly with its schnabel forend profile intact.
The bore is outstanding, remaining mostly bright with sharp rifling and very little fouling, rating 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly and the cartridge counter is operational, though the rifle has not been test fired by us. As with any used firearm, a thorough cleaning and inspection are recommended before use. Overall, this is a highly attractive Savage Model 99A in .250-3000 Savage, offering excellent bore condition, strong remaining finish, classic lever-action design, and strong collector and field appeal in a desirable early-1980s configuration.
