Our Assessment: The Savage Model 99A produced in 1972 represents one of the later evolutions of the legendary Model 99 platform, carrying forward a design that had already proven itself for decades in the American sporting field. By this period, the Model 99 had transitioned into a more streamlined production rifle while still retaining its defining features, including the internal rotary magazine and cartridge counter. Chambered in .250-3000 Savage, one of the earliest high velocity sporting cartridges introduced in 1915, the rifle reflects a continued appreciation for flat shooting, efficient cartridges well suited to medium game hunting.
This example presents in Very Good condition, retaining approximately 95% of its original finish with only light handling marks and a few minor scratches visible. The 20″ barrel and solid frame configuration give the rifle a compact and balanced profile, while the receiver is drilled and tapped and fitted with Weaver bases for optics. The walnut stocks, featuring a schnabel forend and straight grip, show light wear including minor compression marks but remain structurally sound with no cracks or chips. The color case hardening on the lever remains vivid, adding visual contrast and reinforcing the rifle’s well-preserved appearance.
The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, with some light fouling present. The action functions correctly, and the internal rotary magazine with cartridge counter remains operational, maintaining one of the key mechanical advantages of the Model 99 design. Overall, this Model 99A stands as a clean and well-preserved late-production example, combining classic Savage engineering with strong finish retention and practical configuration.
