Markings: The barrel is marked “SAVAGE ARMS CORPORATION, CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.” and “HI-PRESSURE STEEL – PROOF TESTED.” It is also marked “.250-3000 SAVAGE.” The receiver is marked “SAVAGE MODEL 99.”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade on a ramped base. The rear sight is a semi-buckhorn elevator sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock and forearm are smooth hardwood with checkering on the grip and forearm. The stock shows light handling marks with some shallow nicks and scratches. The LOP measures approximately 13.5” from the front of the trigger to the back of the steel buttplate. The checkering remains well-defined. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, and the rifling is sharp and well-defined. There is very little erosion. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light edge wear, minor thinning on high spots, and scattered handling marks. The lever displays beautiful case coloring, which adds an appealing contrast to the blued finish. The screw heads are sharp with serviceable slots. The markings are clear and legible, including the caliber marking on the barrel. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Savage Model 99 is a revolutionary rifle, especially for its time, as one of the first lever-action rifles to accommodate high-velocity cartridges. Chambered in the .250-3000 Savage, this was the first commercial cartridge to break the 3,000 feet per second mark, making it an excellent choice for small to medium game hunting. With its classic rotary magazine, streamlined design, smooth lever action, and beautiful case-colored lever, the Model 99 is highly regarded among collectors and hunters. This example, manufactured in 1952, with its high condition, clear caliber markings, and stunning finish, is eligible for C&R status and is sure to be a standout addition to any collection.
