Our Assessment: The Savage Model 99H Featherweight is an early and desirable variant of Savage’s innovative lever action rifle, introduced during a period when the company was redefining what a sporting rifle could be. Produced in 1913, this example reflects the lightweight, quick-handling design philosophy behind the “H” designation, offering a more compact and field-friendly configuration. Chambered in .22 Savage Hi Power, a cartridge introduced in 1912 and among the first commercial high-velocity small bore centerfire rounds, the rifle was marketed for both varmints and medium game, gaining a reputation for flat trajectory and surprising performance for its caliber.
This example retains approximately 80% of its original finish, with visible thinning along the barrel, handling wear on the receiver, and scattered light corrosion staining throughout. The color case hardening has faded to mostly muted tones, remaining visible primarily in protected areas. The takedown configuration remains tight, and the rifle is equipped with a Marble folding tang peep sight, complementing the lightweight profile. The walnut stocks, featuring a schnabel forend and straight grip, are matching to the rifle and show honest wear including scratches, compression marks, and a few gouges, but remain structurally sound with no cracks, rating in Good condition overall.
The bore is bright with sharp rifling, though there is light erosion near the muzzle and some fouling present, rating 7 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, and the internal rotary magazine with brass cartridge counter remains operational, preserving one of the defining features of the Model 99 design. Overall, this Model 99H Featherweight stands as a well-balanced example of an early 20th century sporting rifle, combining desirable lightweight configuration, matching components, and solid mechanical condition with honest signs of field use.
