Action Type: Lever action rifle fed from internal rotary magazine.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight has been removed and the dovetail plugged. There is a peep sight installed on the tang of this rifle.

Stock Configuration & Condition:  The stock is two piece smooth walnut, Schnabel tipped forend, straight grip, straight comb, and crescent metal buttplate. The LOP is 13″ from trigger to buttplate. The stock has been refinished. There are scratches and compression dents throughout. There are a few spots of chipped finish. There are some superficial grain separations on the right side of the buttstock. There are no structural cracks. Overall this stock is in Good condition. The serial numbers on the stock are no longer present and due to wear patterns on the barrel it is possible that some parts, stock or barrel, have been swapped.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is light fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 60% of its original metal finish. There is handling and operational wear, most notably at the front of the receiver. There are scratches and bluing wear throughout. The screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Good condition. 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements. The action to barrel fit is tight and we did not take it down.

Our Assessment: The Savage Model 1899A Takedown is one of Arthur Savage’s most innovative sporting rifles, combining a strong hammerless lever-action with the company’s distinctive rotary magazine. This 1908-produced example is chambered in .25-35 WCF and features the desirable takedown configuration with a 26″ barrel, tang-mounted peep sight, and classic straight-grip walnut stocks with a Schnabel forend and crescent buttplate. The rotary magazine allowed the safe use of pointed bullets while incorporating Savage’s cartridge counter, making the Model 1899 one of the most advanced sporting rifles of its era.

Introduced in 1899, the Savage Model 1899 quickly earned a reputation as one of America’s finest lever-action rifles, offering features well ahead of its competition. Its hammerless design, rotary magazine, and takedown option made it a favorite among hunters who valued portability, strength, and modern cartridge performance. While the .25-35 WCF is more commonly associated with Winchester rifles, Savage also chambered the Model 1899 for the cartridge in comparatively limited numbers, making examples such as this an interesting variation for both Savage and cartridge collectors.

This rifle retains approximately 60% of its original metal finish with honest handling wear and scattered blue loss. The refinished walnut stocks remain in Good condition with scattered handling marks and superficial grain separations but no structural cracks, though the missing stock serial numbers and wear patterns suggest that the barrel, stock, or other components may have been exchanged at some point during the rifle’s service life. The bright bore retains sharp rifling and rates 9/10, while the action functions correctly. Overall, this is a solid early Savage Model 1899A Takedown in Good condition that remains both a desirable collectible and a mechanically sound sporting rifle.
