Our Assessment:  The Savage Model 1899 in its takedown Featherweight configuration represents one of the most forward-thinking American sporting rifles of the early 20th century, combining portability, innovative design, and modern ballistics for its time. By 1919, Savage had firmly established the Model 1899 as a premier hunting rifle, and the introduction of the .250-3000 Savage cartridge marked a significant milestone as one of the first commercial cartridges to achieve 3,000 feet per second. This pairing of a lightweight takedown rifle with a high velocity cartridge reflects a shift toward flatter shooting, more efficient hunting arms that defined the post-World War I sporting landscape.

This example retains approximately 75% of its original finish, with noticeable thinning and handling wear on the receiver, along with scattered scratches and corrosion staining throughout. The lever’s color case hardening has softened but still shows traces of color in protected areas, adding to the rifle’s period character. The takedown system remains tight with no play, an important indicator of condition for this configuration. The rifle is equipped with a tang-mounted folding peep sight, replacing the original rear sight which has been removed and the dovetail plugged. The checkered walnut stocks, matching to the rifle including the buttplate, show typical wear with scratches, compression marks, and a small chip on the forend, but remain structurally sound and in Good condition overall.

The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, with only light fouling present. The action functions correctly, and the internal rotary magazine with brass cartridge counter remains operational, preserving one of the defining features of the Model 1899 design. Overall, this rifle stands as a solid example of a takedown Savage 1899 in a historically significant chambering, combining early high velocity cartridge development with a lightweight, practical sporting platform.
